Kinetoscope

Kinetoscope was invented by Thomas Edison in 1888. Kinetoscope is derived from the words ‘kineto’ (motion) and ‘scope’ (to view). It is a miniature movie projection device through which a single person can watch a movie of few seconds through a small peep hole.

Zoetrope

Zoetrope is a cylinder with equally spaced slits around it, inside the surface a series of hand written images are placed. When the cylinder is rotated animation can be watched through the slits more than one person can see at the same time due to number of slits.

This was the first projection device capable of projecting images on the screen. This works similar to zoetrope but instead of slits mirrors are placed on the concentric cylinder.

It is another simple animation technique. The principle is when a set of sequential pictures are seen at high speed, and they create an illusion of motion.

Comics

Comic is also a type of animation. The difference is comics are series of still image arranged (usually from left to right or top to bottom), but in animation these series of still images are moved to create an illusion of motion.

Comics in another dimension generate the blue print for animation; we can also say that animation is “the moving version of comics”. Many animated series and movies like Spiderman, Batman or Hulk are inspired by famous marvel comics. There is a strong relation between comics and animation; in most of the cases they are interdependent. Today digital versions of comics are also available (e.g. Hulk from Virgin comics).
